Sports and Recreation

Presently, the Recreation Department is undergoing a restructuring and re-organization process and this will be completed in the next fiscal year of 2012. The Recreation Department, Youth Department, Gathering Place and Arena staff initiated the planning of the restructuring on the organization chart last winter and summer. The departments must consult and submit the information to the Chief and Council for a final decision before implementation.

Staff and Summer Student Employment Program
The Recreation Staff presently consists of Marion Blackned, Interim Sports & Recreation Coordinator who was replacing Hugo Cowboy for a year as Hugo took one year off and will be returning in August 2012. Mary J. Salt, Leisure Sports Program Coordinator came back to work with us; Martina Cowboy, Minor Sports Coordinator; Rachel A Hester, Assistant Minor Sports; Kurt Hester, Interim Assistant Sports & Recreation Coordinator.

During the Summer Student Employment Program (S.S.E.P), we hired ten (10) summer students. These students completed the program in Mid-August of 2011. The Recreation Department subsidizes 50% of the S.S.E.P from the General Operating Budget.

Recreation Facilities
Presently, we have the following recreation facilities: the Sarah Stephen Memorial Arena; the Gathering Place (fitness room, gymnasium and pool hall); the Chief Sidney’s Softball Fields, Playgrounds (community playgrounds, school playground and Daycare playground) ; the School gymnasium and the Paved outdoor rink/ Outdoor basketball Court.

The mission statement for the parks & facilities department is providing a safe environment for all facilities under our department. The parks and facilities department takes care of Sarah Stephen Memorial arena, Chief Sydney’s field and both public playgrounds located in different areas in the community of Waskaganish.

Local Tournaments and Events
The main purpose of these local events or tournaments is to provide community members the opportunity to become physically healthy by participating through sports, social, and recreational activities. These activities will encourage participants to enjoy these events and hopefully, develop a healthy active lifestyle. Some of the tournaments and activities this past year include the Simba Karate Club; Canada Day Celebration; Local Floor Hockey; Local Softball Tournamen; Local Basketball Tourney; Rising Stars Basketball (Titus Channer); Darren Zack Fastball Camp; Local Entities Coed Softball Tournament; James Bay Minor Hockey Leagues; Albert Diamond Golf Classic.

Invitational Tournaments
The purpose of these tournaments is to host and invite various communities within our territory and the Western communities in the Ontario side of James Bay to participate. These Invitational Tournaments are to display our highly competitive and recreational hockey and broomball players to the community members and spectators from other communities. The community of Waskaganish welcomes these athletes to their private homes and provides them hospitality throughout the weekend.

Schedule of Tournaments
Last fiscal year we held the 6th Annual Invitational Basketball Tournament in July of 2011and the 7th Annual Softball Tournament in August of 2011. There was the Waskaganish Senior Hockey & Broomball Tournament in Jan of 2012; the Minor / Class C Hockey and Broomball Tournament and the RUPERT RIVER CUP in March of 2012. In April of 2012, we held the Spring Hunt Games.

Other tournaments that were held last fiscal year include A CREE Fast pitch & Softball Tournament in August of 2011; a CREE Basketball Tournament in Mistissini; a CREE Senior Hockey & Broomball Tournament in December of 2011; the James Bay Minor Hockey Leagues Coastal Championships and the CREE Minor Hockey & Broomball Tournament in April of 2012.

The Waskaganish First Nation Recreation Department hosts Invitational Hockey and Broomball Tournaments and other special events which creates an opportunity for our local enterprises or businesses such as restaurants, grocery stores, and others to generate revenue throughout the weekend. A few of the businesses contribute financially towards these annual hockey, broomball, softball and basketball tournaments.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors that support and contribute to these tournaments; because without their continued support we would not succeed in hosting these tournaments. Also, we would like thank all the volunteers that helped out during tournaments and other events that the Recreation Department organized.

Thank you. Megwetch.
