Youth and Recreation

The Youth and Recreation Team, is committed to bringing our community together and promoting healthy living through planning, organizing, & implementing sport, leisure, & recreation activities, while promoting career development & cultural enrichment.

Currently the Department employs twenty-five (25) individuals, twenty-one (21) on a full-time basis and four (4) on a seasonal basis. The Department Director, Charles J. Hester, also contributes to the Community Centre Working Group, Cree Regional Events & Entertainment, Waskaganish Arena Construction Technical Committee, a Working Group on the Community Bus and the Eeyou Istchee Sports Recreation Leisure Group.

Construction on the new Arena will be completed in late December 2012 or Mid-January 2013. We foresee the creation of fifteen (15) new full-time and/or part-time positions for the new Arena complex. We hope the community is looking forward to having a more modern and safer complex in which to practice their favorite pastime.

At a Members General Assembly in 2010 a resolution was adopted mandating the Band to invest in a coach bus for the community. We are pleased to report that the Waskaganish Community bus will be in service as of June 2012. We are extremely thankful to Waska Resources and Siibii Development for their contribution to this community investment.

In September 2011, our community hosted another successful golf tournament at the Belvedere Golf Club in Val d’Or. Through sponsorships, auctions and other fund raising efforts we are pleased to announce that we raised over $80,000.00 for the youth of Waskaganish. The money raised went to covering travel costs for local minor teams and to host the Julie Robitaille School of Power Skating here in Waskaganish. We are currently exploring the option of hosting the next edition of the Albert Diamond Golf Classic in Mont Tremblant, Quebec.
